System Integration
What is systems integration?
Systems integration at a companywide level covers the integration of individual intentions of the company based on its business intention (business strategy) into a comprehensive system of automated support for all key processes. The aim of integration at this level is the attainment of an effectively functioning system of management and organisation of work with internal culture and external picture of the company corresponding to its focus.
In the area of information technology systems integration represents a tool for the successful combination of the individual components (new and existing) used during the building of information systems into a functioning comprehensive whole, which is a comprehensive automatic information system or its integrated part. The systems integrator is a guarantor of successful implementation and integration. The individual components creating the resultant whole generally come from several different suppliers who are sub-contractors of the integrator in the conventional sense of integration, but for certain extensive projects where there is a suitable division of responsibilities and authorities, they can also supply directly to the customer.
Technological and methodological aspects
Systems integration uses many tools, utilises and applies various methodologies. In addition to systems integration projects, there is the application to a greater or lesser extent of selected solutions coming under the services of management and IT consultation, once again including associated tools – methodologies and procedures. We specify the following in particular:
- methodology for project management, including management of quality for the project and its outputs in compliance with standards of the series ISO 9000:2000 and 10006 and other sources and recommendations (for example PMBOK® Guide from PMI),
- evaluation (audit) of existing state of iS/IT in relation to management system. Updating of information strategy and concept for development of IS/IT,
- analysis and optimisation of corporate processes.
Advantages for customer
The focus on the systems integrator gives the customer value primarily in the possibility of focussing on the implementation of own business strategy by delegating certain elements of responsibility (and authorisations) during the implementation of automatic support for processes for a professionally specialised subject – integrator. Using this approach, it is possible to minimise losses associated with the conceptual or technological fragmentation (implementation fragmentation) of the information system. Another significant advantage is also the more flexible absorption of new trends in the IT area and their more rapid implementation in practice (the integrator generally has larger sources in the development area than internal IT), which in today’s rapid development of electronic business can be a crucial competitive advantage. The following benefits must also be mentioned:
- high level of guarantee for result (risk elimination),
- saving in the field of coordination of several subcontractors (material and services),
- unified solution to interface between individual parts of system (definition of standards).
